Myths about GLP-1 Medications

More than 40% of American adults are classified as obese (BMI > 30). The appeal of weight loss drugs continues to grow. This opens up many questions about the safety and efficacy of these medications. The reality is that many commonly accepted “facts” about weight loss drugs are simply myths. We want to set the record straight so informed decisions can be made about weight loss options.

Myth #1: Weight loss medications are a magic pill

The weightloss success rate is higher when these drugs are integrated into a regimen that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise. Weight loss medications are strategically designed to support the process by suppressing appetite, boosting metabolism, or modifying fat absorption. It is important to view them as “tools that complement” rather than substitute for a holistic approach to weight management.

Myth #2: Weight loss medications are unsafe

Safety concerns can prevent some from exploring weight loss medications or injections. It is important to understand that these drugs go through stringent testing and approval processes by regulatory agencies, including the FDA. Although side effects may occur, they are typically mild and manageable. Discuss possible side effects with your provider so an informed decision can be made.

Myth #3: Med Spas or clinics “dilute or water down” compounded drugs

Our goal is to help you lose weight while being safe and effective. We only use FDA regulated Compounding Pharmacies to ensure the meds we offer are safe and effective. Compounding pharmacies are required by the FDA to only use the powder or base from the Semaglutide or Tirzepatide manufacturer. We do not alter the drugs we get from these pharmacies.

Myth #4: Weight loss medications work for everyone

Weight loss medications do not follow a one-size-fits-all approach, individual differences in their efficacy and the influence of variables like genetics, lifestyles, and general health can affect how well they work. Setting realistic expectations is important, recognizing these medications may not produce rapid or substantial weight loss for everyone.

Myth #5: Weight loss injections are painful

Most weight loss injections utilize small, fine needles and are generally painless. Any discomfort experienced during the injection is typically minimal and short-lived. Most individuals feel that the benefits of weight loss injections far exceed any temporary discomfort.

Myth #6: Weight loss medications are a short-term solution

Achieving and sustaining weight loss, as well as maintaining overall health requires the adoption and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. This includes regular exercise and a balanced diet and maintaining smaller portion sizes. Weight loss medications can help kickstart a healthier lifestyle, but in order to maintain the loss, life style changes are essential! These medications can be taken less often to help maintain the weight loss. Maintenance looks different for each individual and needs to be planned out with your provider.

Myth #7: Weight loss medications are only for severely obese individuals

Weight loss medications aren’t exclusively for severely obese individuals. They can be prescribed to help anyone who needs to lose weight. The FDA guidelines are for those who have a BMI between 27-30 with a comorbidity (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hypothyroid, sleep apnea, and renal disease), or with a BMI greater than 30 without a comorbidity. Morbidity obesity is defined as a BMI greater than 40.

Myth #8: Weight loss medications are expensive

The expense of weight loss medications can differ and some can be covered by insurance. This usually requires a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. There are alternative options available such as compounded Semaglutide & compounded Tirzepatide. When contemplating the potential health benefits and enhanced quality of life resulting from weight loss, the investment may be worthwhile for many individuals.
